How to Follow Posted Wall Brackets

Understand and follow paper or posted wall brackets when a tournament does not provide reliable live online brackets.

Wall brackets are less common, but they still exist

Not every tournament has a dependable live online bracket. Some events still post paper brackets or printed bracket sheets on a wall, table, hallway, or designated bracket area. Families should know how to use them.

Find the correct bracket

  1. Confirm the age or division.
  2. Confirm the weight class.
  3. Find your wrestler's name and team.
  4. Trace the line from the wrestler's current position to the next match.

Read the bracket as a path

A bracket is a map of possible matches. A win usually advances the wrestler along the championship side. In tournaments with consolation wrestling, a loss can move the wrestler to a consolation path. Do not assume one loss means the tournament is over.

Watch for handwritten changes

Paper brackets may be updated by hand. Look for corrected names, scratched wrestlers, changed bout numbers, changed mat assignments, or results written onto the bracket. If the paper bracket and an online system disagree, ask a coach or tournament worker which information is current.

Take a picture

A quick phone photo of the current bracket can help you remember the wrestler's path, but return to the posted bracket for updates. Your photo becomes outdated as soon as new results or corrections are added.

Do not crowd the bracket table

Some tournaments post brackets near the head table or an operations area. Give workers room to update the event. Read the bracket, take the information you need, and move away so other families can do the same.
